How to Wash Gym Clothes So They Last (and Don't Smell)
Cold water, no softener, inside out. Simple washing and drying habits that keep training tees, joggers and hoodies fresh for longer.

Demo imageTraining clothes take a beating: sweat, friction, sun and a lot of washing. A few small habits make them last noticeably longer — and stop that smell that never quite washes out.
1. Don't leave sweaty kit in your bag
Bacteria love warm, damp fabric. If you can't wash straight away, at least take the clothes out and hang them up to dry. This one habit prevents most lingering odour.
2. Turn clothes inside out
The inside is where sweat and skin oils build up, so that's the side that needs the wash. It also protects prints — like a back graphic — from rubbing against other clothes in the drum.
3. Wash cool, not hot
Cold or lukewarm water is enough for everyday sweat and is kinder to stretch fibres and prints. Hot washes can shrink cotton and wear out elastic waistbands faster.
4. Skip the fabric softener
Softener leaves a coating on fibres. On quick-dry fabrics that coating blocks the knit from moving sweat, and it can trap odour. Use a normal amount of regular detergent — more isn't better.
5. Air dry, out of harsh sun
- Hang tees and joggers to dry; tumble-drying on high heat wears fabric and prints.
- Dry in shade or indirect light. Strong sun dries fast but fades dark colours over time.
- Quick-dry fabrics are usually ready within a few hours, even indoors.
6. Deal with stubborn smell
If a shirt still smells after washing, soak it for 30 minutes in cool water with a cup of white vinegar, then wash as normal. Always check the care label first.
